From Perseverance to Purpose: Jeannie Haywood’s Journey of Faith and Education

At 50 years old, many might feel it’s “too late” to chase a dream. But for Jeannie Haywood, completing her dual degrees was more than an academic achievement — it was a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of God’s guidance in every step of life.

We had the honor of speaking with Jeannie about her inspiring journey, the challenges she faced as a non-traditional student, and the unwavering faith that carried her through some of life’s darkest moments.

What Inspired You to Return to School?

When asked about what motivated her to pursue her degrees, Jeannie shared a personal story:

At first, it was my husband. I had worked at Walmart for nearly 20 years where my tenure concluded with a management restructure, which resulted in my income not being enough. He told me, ‘You can go to school for free and get $1,500 a month.’ From there a new door opened for my next journey, That was the initial spark. But then it became more than that — I wanted to be a leader for my kids, to show them that anything is possible when you work for it. And I wanted to prove to myself that at 50, with God first, I am capable of accomplishing anything.

Her journey began with practical motivation but quickly transformed into a mission of faith, self-discovery, and inspiration for her family.

How Did Faith Help You Through Moments of Doubt?

Jeannie’s faith in God became her anchor during the most challenging times of her life:

“Before February 7, 2022, I was the biggest people pleaser you could know. I didn’t truly know God — I just believed what people told me. But when I lost everything — my job, my transportation, and even some friendships — I found myself in a very dark place, wanting to give up on life. That’s when God became my first priority. Faith without work is dead, and my faith gave me the strength to keep living.”

Her words serve as a reminder of the silent battles many face. She emphasizes that even the brightest smiles can hide the heaviest burdens, and small acts of kindness, a simple “How are you?” can make a life-changing difference.

Key Scriptures, Prayers, and People That Grounded Her

Jeannie credits Hebrews 11:1 — “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” — as a guiding scripture during her journey. She also emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive and uplifting people:

“You need intercessors and prayer warriors — people who lift you up when you can’t do it yourself. The Bible teaches us through the story of the paralyzed man that friends can help us reach the place where we are healed. You need that support in life.”

Challenges as a Non-Traditional Student

Returning to school later in life came with its hurdles. Jeannie shares:

The first semester was a struggle — I didn’t know how to use PowerPoint or other tools. But I learned to put God first, focus on my studies, and believe in myself. With God, you can do everything.”

Her journey shows that setbacks are part of growth, and trusting God’s timing makes all the difference.

How Did Earning Your Degree Change Your Perspective?

“It changed my outlook entirely. I realized that as long as I put God first, anything is possible. Not only did I earn my bachelor’s degree, but I also received my associate degree and additional certifications. Everything is possible when you trust in God.”

Her achievements are a testament to perseverance, faith, and the belief that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.

Advice for Others

Jeannie offers encouragement for anyone feeling “too late” to chase their dreams:

“Don’t give up. Keep fighting. Put God first, trust Him, and release your worries into His hands. Faith works when you work it. Stay focused, stay consistent, and stay faithful.”

What “Get Them Home” Means to Her

When reflecting on the phrase “Get Them Home,” Jeannie shared a deeply personal perspective:

“As a mother, I wanted my children to return home safely, in every sense. I prayed and trusted God, and He brought them back in His timing. ‘Get Them Home’ isn’t just spiritual — it’s emotional, mental, and literal. You have to trust God’s timing.”

Her story reflects the prodigal son parable — trusting God’s plan even when the journey is long and uncertain.
